As is tradition, we sent judges to this year’s San Diego Science & Engineering Fair at the Balboa Park Activity Center. This year, we implemented a two-step selection process. First, seven nominators browsed through over 850 project abstracts to find suitable projects. For judges attended the fair to visit the nominated projects, to read the posters/project materials, and to interview the students.
Each of the four project winners had a sound technical approach, contained human performance implications, were enthusiastic, and thoughtfully fielded the judges’ questions.
The awards ceremonies were structured to fit student preferences and schedules.
One winner was honored at school at a flag ceremony, with parents, teachers, and fellow students in attendance. • Other winners were honored at an SD-HFES Science & Engineering Fair Recognition Day. This event consisted of: an introduction to Human Factors & Ergonomics, a hands-on demonstration of software prototypes and eye-tracking software, and an informal discussion of their projects in front of SD-HFES membership.
Overall, the event was a great opportunity to serve the community and to provide outreach for HFES. Thanks to the nominators and judges for their service: Teresa Alley, Joe Cohen, Nancy Heacox, John Gwynne, Frank Lacson, Mike Quinn, George Seymour, Alicia Wolf, and Marina Zielinski.

Pacific Science & Engineering has combined efforts with SD-HFES to help San Diego Food Bank provide food to those in need. Every other month since April 2008, and sometimes every month during time of need, a team of 10-15 members has gone to the San Diego Food Bank to sort and package food. Besides helping people in need, this has been a great team building exercise as well.
If you are interested in volunteering at San Diego Food Bank, please email us and we will add you to the invitation list.

IThirteen members and guests of SD-HFES toured the North City Water Reclamation Plant on 8 July, 2010. This was a fine adjunct to our Greywater Project that started with World Usability Day in November 2009 and culminated with a display at the EarthFair in April 2010.
On the tour, we observed Control Stations as well as Pumping and Holding Stations. We learned about primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment. We discovered ‘how the water flows’ from the Colorado River into San Diego, through various treatment and usage venues, until it is released from the Pt Loma facility into the ocean.
