Anomaly Detection - Improvised Explosive Devices

PSE, working closely with Marines from First Marine Expeditionary Force (1 MEF) and staff from Marine Corps Warfighting Lab (MCWL), developed a prototype training tool to further hone skills in detecting Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

To establish a baseline for the exercise, Marines studied a series of photographs of real streets in towns in Iraq or Afghanistan. After the baseline was established, the Marine would then be presented with the same series of photos, but this time with an IED placed in position with the advice of an experienced, battle-hardened Marine. Marines quickly learned to accurately identify anomalies in their baseline and spot the deadly threat
