PSE Scientists Assess Technologies at Trident Warrior 2009
The Data Analysis Working Group for the Trident Warrior (TW) 2009 experiment included PSE Scientists Kevin Aeling, Roberta Bernhard, Nancy Heacox and Chiesha Stevens. TW is an annual FORCEnet field experiment hosted by Naval Network Warfare Command. Its purpose is to improve communication, situation awareness, and speed of delivering information and tools to warfighters. During TW09, more than 50 new and developing technologies were operated by United States Second Fleet staff and coalition partners across a wide variety of operational areas from June 16 through July 2, 2009. These operational areas included Command and Control (C2), Networks, Intelligence / Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), Information Operations (IO), Information Assurance/Cross Domain Solutions (IA/CDS), Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA), and Naval Fire Support.
Ms. Bernhard and Ms. Stevens boarded the USS Nassau (LHA04) amphibious assault ship. Ms. Bernhard observed the ship’s staff as they interacted with and evaluated new C2. Ms. Stevens coordinated the collection of qualitative data onboard, and earned the ‘Top DAWG’ award issued from the top management staff of TW09. Mr. Aeling observed the performance of MDA technologies at multiple shore locations in the Norfolk, Virginia area. He also assisted with a mock Search-and-Rescue effort from the deck of a Coast Guard Auxiliary craft. Dr. Heacox managed the collection of qualitative data across all TW09 locations. She, the manager of the Master Event List, and the System Data Manager formed a central control cell that ensured the experiment ran smoothly.
