Training for a New Information Management Tool

The Approach

The multiple capabilities of the K-Web require that operators perform inter-related tasks that involve learning how to use several K-Web capabilities.

Besides learning how to use each K-Web capability, operators also had to learn the business rules for the K-Web's use. K-Web enables web pages containing mission-relevant information to be created and displayed to command staff who then use this information to gain situation awareness and make decisions.

The Solution

Several types of training aids were created to teach operators how to make use of the K-Web's capabilities:

• Quick reference guide
• PowerPoint training briefs for specific K-Web tools
• Tips for work arounds
• PowerPoint training briefs for general K-Web business rules
• Training on use of K-Web viewers

Benefits

The training materials created for the K-Web let operators get up to speed with a minimum of wasted time and effort. Operators reported that the training they received was very helpful in understanding the K-Web concept and in learning how to use its various information handling and display capabilities.

The K-Web was a resounding success during Operation Enduring Freedom, primarily because K-Web operators could easily understand and use its broad range of functionality.
